How do I choose a Complementary Therapy that is right for me?

Astara offers a range of complementary therapies, which are Clinical Aromatherapy, Eastern Face Massage, Hot Stone Massage, Indian Head Massage and Swedish Massage. Please read the descriptions of the different types of massage in the paragraphs below.

Clinical Aromatherapy

Clinical Aromatherapy is a holistic treatment that uses essential oils. The oils each have their own unique odour and healing properties. As a clinical aromatherapist I make essential oil preparations specific to the needs of each client that can be used in either massage or other ways if massage is not indicated or preferred.

Hot Stone Massage

Hot Stone Massage

The stones are made from basalt and are heated then placed on the energy centres of the body. These are then used to massage the body, the heat directly relaxing the muscles of the body.

Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage

The massage consists of three parts – the neck and shoulders, the head, and the face. The various massage techniques used help to relieve tension, stiffness and headaches, improve circulation and promote an overall feeling of well–being.

Common Questions

Please note that the times allocated include the consultation, massage and after care.

Massages can be tailored to the needs of the individual and costs will be agreed at the time of the booking.

All massages are carried out using essential oils, natural waxes and creams.

Are there any conditions where massage may not be advisable?

If you have a known illness it is usually best to consult your GP for their permission before seeking any treatment.

Massage is not advisable for the following conditions:

  • Cancer (if undergoing treatment)
  • First 3 months of pregnancy
  • History of thrombosis
  • High temperature, fever
  • Swelling or inflammation
  • Severe bruising
  • Acute infectious diseases i.e. flu, chest infection or a bad cold
  • Recent injury or surgery

There are some conditions where caution is required and it is best to speak to the massage therapist about this.

Conditions where caution is required:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Epilepsy
  • High or low blood pressure (must have been under control for a minimum of 6 months)
  • Diabetes (must have been under control for a minimum of 6 months)
  • Sensitive skin/skin disorders
  • Heart Conditions

How do I make an appointment?

Please call 01450 363 927 / 07901 678925 to make an appointment. Appointments are available from 12—8pm Thursdays and Fridays and 10am—6pm Saturdays.

What should I do if I am unable to attend my appointment?

Please where possible give at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel your appointment.

What should I expect from my initial visit?

Your initial visit may last for between 30 to 90 minutes depending on the treatment and will include a full consultation. The consultation will include the reasons why you are seeking treatment, any relevant medical history and short questions about your current health status. Following this consultation we will then proceed with the massage with your approval.

What happens after my first visit?

Some people may only come for a one off visit for relaxation purposes. However, there may be other people who come for help with a particular problem. This will more than likely require more than one visit but will be discussed with the person at the end of their first treatment. Follow up treatments will last for up to one hour and will include a brief chat about their first visit and any changes they may have experienced since then.
